Are There Any Downsides to a Same-Day Crown? Lab-Made Options

While CEREC same-day crowns are an incredibly convenient option, CEREC can only create crowns using porcelain. Crowns made of metals and premium materials will require the help of our partner lab, and we will place a temporary crown in the meantime.

This takes about two weeks, during which you will wear a temporary crown to protect your affected tooth. During your consultation at our Mesa, AZ, practice, we will discuss all your options and help choose the best crown for your needs.

Your Treatment Timeline

Depending on the materials you choose, your dental crown will take one or two appointments at our practice in Mesa, Arizona. Here are the steps involved:

Tooth Prep

If the dentistexaminingyour teeth determines you need a crown, we will begin by treating the source of the problem. For example, an infection that has reached the tooth's inner chamber will first require a root canal treatment. Regardless of treatment method, the dentist will anesthetize the area and reshape the tooth to create room for the temporary crown or permanent crown.

Impressions

Next, thedentist will scan your teeth with an intraoral camera to capture digital impressions. The CEREC software uses these impressions to design a crown, and the design is uploaded directly to our in-office milling device. If you choose a material other than porcelain, we'll send the impressions to our partner lab and place a temporary crown over the tooth in the meantime.

Production

The CEREC milling machine precisely carves the porcelain restoration to your custom dimensions out of a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic. Production typically takes about an hour or less, during which you can wait comfortably in the office. Lab-made permanentcrowns are handled by specialized technicians and will be ready in about two to three weeks.

Placement

Once your crown is ready, we will check the fit and color and make any necessary adjustments. If no modifications are needed, we will attach the crown with strong dental cement. The crowned tooth is placed under a special light that cures and hardens the cement. Finally, we clean and polish your teeth, and treatment is complete.

Sedation Options

Our practice offers nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation options for those who are anxious about visiting the dentist. Whether you need to undergo root canal therapy before crown placement or have dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can help you feel at ease.

Maintaining Your Dental Crown

With proper care and regular visits to the dentist, dental crowns can last for 10 years or more. Maintenance is simple: you should essentially treat your permanent crown like you would your natural teeth. Make sure to brush thoroughly and floss at least once a day, but pull the string from front to back rather than up and down the sides of your teeth to prevent the crown from dislodging.

We recommend scheduling a check-up at ouroffice at least twice a year for a professional cleaning. Of course, if you have any questions at any time before or after your treatment please reach out to our Mesa practice. A member of our friendly team will be happy to assist you in any way possible.

Is It Time to Replace Your Dental Crown? Here Are Some Signs It’s Time to Visit Us in Mesa

Pain or Swelling

If your current crown is causing you pain or discomfort, it may be time to get it replaced. Turn to our practice if you experience swelling of the gums around your crown or sensitivity of the crowned tooth; you may be dealing with an infection or a compromised restoration.

Crown Damage

Whether your crown has noticeable wear and tear or has a chip or crack, our dentists will take a look and let you know whether it can be repaired or if it’s time for a brand new one.

Appearance Concerns

Dental crowns can be integral to toothfunction — but they should deliver on aesthetics, too. If you have cosmetic concerns regarding how your crowned tooth looks next to your natural teeth, we can discuss replacement options that give you a smile you feel confident in.

Your Crown Is 10+ Years Old

Even if you’re not seeing any signs of physical damage, it may be time for crown replacement if your crown is over 10 years old. If you’ve had your crown for a decade or longer, it pays to have a dental professional monitor it and recommend replacement when necessary.

Paying for Dental Crowns

We never want cost to be a barrier to the dental treatment you need, which is why we work with you to keep everything as affordable as possible. Fortunately, dental crowns placed to restore a damaged tooth are often covered, at least in part, by insurance. Any necessary pre-crown procedures, sedation, and other factors will ultimately influence the total cost of your individual treatment.

We accept most insurances as well as financing through LendingClub and CareCredit®, which lets you split the cost of treatment into monthly payments to keep out-of-pocket expenses more manageable.
